Downtown Sapulpa’s walkable Christmas experience is officially an Oklahoma holiday tradition. This season marks its second year and we ventured out on a Friday night to witness Dewey Ave adorned in all its festive glory. Our mission was twofold – to revel in the holiday spirit and to uncover the purported new and improved features. We also went to celebrate my daughter’s sixteenth birthday with her and her friends. Happy birthday, Brielle!
Arriving at 5 PM, we aimed to beat the darkness and explore the Chute while businesses were still open. While we loved last year’s experience, we were also left slightly disappointed as many shops closed early. This time around, however, there was a noticeable change.
2025 Update: The Route 66 Christmas Chute in Sapulpa will not take place this year. We can’t wait to see it back in 2026!

What’s New at Sapulpa’s Walkable Christmas Experience?
One of the most significant improvements was the extended operating hours of downtown shops. Sapulpa’s downtown shops seem to have embraced the holiday fervor with extended hours, ensuring that eager shoppers can peruse local treasures well into the evening. The Christmas Chute has become not only a celebration of the holiday spirit but a spotlight on local businesses, offering a prime opportunity for commerce. The installation of more light displays on various corners and side streets make for twinkling holiday photo ops.
This year’s walkable Christmas experience boasted not only more shopping opportunities but also an increased number of food trucks and hot chocolate vendors. These are in addition to the sweet shops, coffee bars, and dining establishments along Dewey. A piece of advice for Chute-goers this year – don’t confine your exploration solely to Dewey Ave. Venture onto the side streets, and you’ll discover hidden gems tucked away in the nooks and crannies of Sapulpa’s historic downtown. It’s a reminder that the Christmas Chute is not just a linear experience but an invitation to explore the heart of the community.
Visit Santa Claus on Route 66
Who could forget the star of the show? Santa Claus himself makes a grand appearance on Fridays and Saturdays from 6 to 9 PM. The setup is nothing short of enchanting, creating an immersive experience for young and old alike. It’s a testament to the meticulous planning that goes into every detail of the Chute, ensuring a sense of holiday magic. The sweet setup creates a magical space for children to share their Christmas wishes and capture a photo with the jolly old man in red.
As we left Sapulpa’s Route 66 Christmas Chute, the air was thick with anticipation and goodwill. The community’s dedication to making thoughtful improvements has turned an already enchanting experience into an unmissable holiday tradition. As the Chute continues to evolve, one can’t help but be excited about the prospect of even more growth and magic in the years to come.
Is the Sapulpa Walkable Christmas Experience Worth the Drive?
For us, the drive to Sapulpa took a little over an hour, and it was unquestionably worth it. The Chute had evolved into a festive extravaganza, addressing the shortcomings of the previous year and embracing the holiday spirit wholeheartedly. However, the question arises – is it worth a more extended road trip?
The question of whether it’s worth a long drive is subjective, and factors such as distance, personal preferences, and available time come into play. Our own drive, a little over an hour one-way, was unquestionably worthwhile. The expanded offerings, improved shopping experience, and festive atmosphere made the journey a highlight of our holiday season. While it may absolutely be worth a one hour or hour and a half drive, we acknowledge the experience might differ for those facing a more considerable travel distance. The question arises – is it worth a more extended road trip?
We couldn’t ignore the perspective of another visitor who traveled a whopping 4.5 hours one-way only to express disappointment. In my own opinion, driving such a distance for the Chute alone does seem excessive. Not because it isn’t a unique and beautiful walkable Christmas experience, but it simply isn’t practical to travel nine hours to spend two hours at an attraction. I’d be lying if I told you I would (under normal circumstances) ever even consider that.
How to Make the Most of Your Road Trip
The key lies in perspective and planning. While a long journey solely for the Christmas Chute might be unreasonable, considering the option of combining the Chute visit with other activities or planning an overnight stay transforms the equation. As one visitor wisely noted, making the trip more than worthwhile involves turning it into a broader experience. Driving for several hours becomes more reasonable when coupled with the opportunity to explore more of Sapulpa and the Tulsa area, extending the visit into a weekend getaway.
There are a myriad of attractions and activities in Tulsa to complement the Christmas Chute experience. From museums and cultural sites to entertainment and recreational activities, the region has so much to offer. Plus, Tulsa has two other amazing Christmas light displays. If you can swing an overnight or weekend stay, you also see the dazzling displays at Rhema and the Tulsa Botanic Gardens.
So, is the Sapulpa Christmas Chute worth the drive? Absolutely, but with a caveat. For those within a reasonable driving distance, it’s an excellent evening outing. However, for those contemplating a more extended journey, the key is to consider it as part of a broader exploration of the area, transforming a simple walkable Christmas experience into a memorable holiday weekend escape. As we bid farewell to the Sapulpa Chute on this Friday night, we look forward to its continued expansion and the surprises it will bring in the years to come.
