These days, I think that terminology is a bit of a stretch but, nonetheless, there is plenty to see and things to do in Medicine Park if you want to get away for a day trip.

Things to Do in Medicine Park

If you’ve never been to Medicine Park, it’s time to pencil in a day trip. This colorful little town is located just outside of Lawton in the Wichita Mountains. Back in the early 1900’s Medicine Park was developed as a resort town that became a popular vacation spot that attracted everyone from outlaws to United States presidents. Although it may not fit the present day idea of what one might call a “resort town”, it’s easy to picture it in its heyday and there are plenty of fun things to do in Medicine Park if you want to get away for a day trip. You can even still cool down in the same clear waters as they did in 1908.

Take a Dip in the Town Swimming Hole

For the last 100 years, people have enjoyed the cool water and beautiful scenery in downtown Medicine Park. In the 1920’s, Bath Lake was formed giving the town a picturesque swimming hole. It’s as popular today as it was in the old days for locals and visitors to take a dip and beat the unforgiving Oklahoma heat. It’s definitely one of the more unique and nostalgic things to do in Medicine Park. There are no changing rooms and it will cost you $3 to jump in but it’s fun and family-friendly. The kiddos will have a blast splashing around in one of the best hidden gems in Oklahoma.

Explore the Local Aquarium

It isn’t a big aquarium but it’s well put together and a lot of fun for kids. The Medicine Park Aquarium and Natural Sciences Center is fairly new, just recently celebrating its fourth year in business. The facility features over 90 native species of fish, reptiles, amphibians and mammals as well as a botanical area to showcase some of the native plants of Oklahoma. It’s a little pricey, as most aquariums are, but it’s a fun and educational way to spend an hour or two indoors with the kids.

The aquarium is open 7 days a week from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Admission ranges from $6 to $12 with discounts for military and senior guests. Entry is free for children 3 and under.

Soak up the views from Mt. Scott

Oklahoma isn’t exactly known for mountains but we do have a few. Mt. Scott near Medicine Park is one of the more prominent and popular. It’s summit only reaches 2464′ but that’s plenty high to enjoy expansive views of the Oklahoma plains and Wichita Mountains. When you add Mount Scott to your list of things to do in Medicine Park, you’re guaranteed to leave the mountain with amazing photos and a new appreciation for the beauty of Oklahoma.

The road leading to the summit is open 7 days a week giving visitors the opportunity to either drive or hike to the top of Mount Scott. Be mindful of when you go depending on which method you choose. The same road that winds up the mountain serves as a paved trail. For safety reasons, there are certain days and times that are reserved for pedestrians and cyclers. Alternatively, other times are open to motor vehicles only.

Enjoy a Scenic Hike in the Wichita Mountains

There is a reason that outdoor activities top the list of things to do in Medicine Park. It is because Medicine Park is situated in a particularly special part of Oklahoma. If you’re familiar with the state, you know we don’t have many mountains. That’s why, though humble, the Wichita Mountains are our little slice of heaven arising out of the endless plains of Oklahoma. They aren’t the Rockies but they’re something and the area is really beautiful.

Down in the valley is Lawtonka Lake where the streams flow from the mountains. The Lawtonka Trails surround the area and are one of the top places to enjoy a scenic nature hike near Medicine Park. There are six trails that offer varying landscapes and degrees of difficulty. You can also head over the the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge to explore one of the many designated hiking trails. These trails range from novice to expert but regardless of which trail you choose, stay alert and don’t hike unprepared. It’s likely you will encounter wildlife, the terrain is rugged, and cell service is spotty.

View Wildlife in the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge

The Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge is one of the best places in the state to observe wildlife. The land was commissioned as part of a project to save certain species, particularly the American Bison from extinction. Throughout the 1800’s, the bison population dwindled from the millions to the mere hundreds. In 1907, 15 Bison were brought to Oklahoma by train from the American Bison Society at what is now known as the Bronx Zoo.

This society was formed by Teddy Roosevelt in partnership with the then director of the Wildlife Conservation Society to begin an effort at saving the American Bison. Today the herd of roughly 650 bison that roam freely in the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge are direct descendants of the original fifteen that arrived in 1907.

Among bison, you will also have a chance at seeing Rocky Mountain elk, wild turkey, prairie dogs, white-tailed deer and more. You will also likely come across Texas longhorn on your trip. While longhorns aren’t considered native wildlife to the area, the refuge keeps the herd in an effort to help preserve their cultural and historical legacy.

Visit the Holy City

It looks like the stone ruins of a city from biblical times but its actually home to the “Prince of Peace” Easter pageant. Dubbed the Holy City of the Wichitas, the life size replica of Jerusalem comes to life each year with a dramatization of the life of Jesus. For 96 years, people have come from all over to view the longest running Easter pageant in the country.

Showings are typically during the weekends of Palm Sunday and Easter. The pageant is free to the public and relies solely on donations, grants and gift shop sales. When the play isn’t in production, visitors are free to roam the grounds and get an up close view of the stone structures depicting the places Jesus would have walked.

Eat a Burger in Meers

Meers, Oklahoma is a little town about 15 or 20 minutes from downtown Medicine Park. Well, it was once a little town. All that remains standing in the old gold mining town is the Meers Store and Restaurant. What was once a general store, doctor’s office and drug store is now home to one of the most famous burgers in Oklahoma, the Meersburger. If you’re extra hungry, the seismic meersburger ought to do the trick. It’s a full-pound burger served on a pie plate.

You might be wondering where the name “Seismic” came from for a burger. The Meers Store was once designated an observatory as the antique seismograph that remains on display etched the earths movements on paper. Unfortunately, the seismograph no longer works but the seismic meersburger continues to be served to a seemingly endless line of customers each day.

Explore the Parallel Forest

If you’re a fan of eerie and unique places, head out for a walk through the Parallel Forest. This enchanting spot is home to rows upon rows of perfectly aligned red cedar trees planted precisely six feet apart. As you meander through this peculiar woodland, the symmetry of the trees draws you into a mesmerizing trance. The otherworldly atmosphere is perfect for photography but the Parallel Forest is also rumored to be haunted.

Whether or not it actually is, it’s easy to understand why people may feel this way. The tall trees create a canopy blocking the sunlight and 16 acres of 20,000 evenly spaced trees create an environment that can seem a little creepy.
