What Do You Need to Pick Your Own Tulips at a Flower Farm

The picking process is simple: just grab a basket and a pair of scissors and start wandering the fields. If you are visiting from outside an hour or so of town, you might want to bring a bucket to keep them in water during the drive home. Tulips are heavy drinkers and will wilt pretty fast. Mine were pretty limp after my 30-minute drive but they perked up just fine after placing them in a vase full of water and the packet of flower food you receive with your purchase.

When you enter the flower farm at Oklahoma Tulips, you’ll be greeted by the bright colors of thousands of tulips. Don’t worry if you’re not sure where to start – the fields are organized in rows by color, so you can easily find your favorite shades. You can pick as many or as few tulips as you like and pay by the stem when you’re finished. If you didn’t bring a pair of scissors, be sure and follow instructions from the staff on how to properly pick your tulips. This will not only help take care of the flower farm but also help your tulips last longer.

Get Your Instagram Game On at Oklahoma Tulips

Of course, no visit to Oklahoma Tulips is complete without taking a few photos for Instagram. The colorful flowers combined with the Oklahoma Sky make the perfect backdrop for your selfies or group photos. Rows upon rows of brightly colored tulips will have you snapping pictures left and right. So, don’t forget your camera or smartphone, because you’ll want to capture every moment of your visit.

Guests are free to take as many pictures as they like. There is even a special little garden area away from the main field set up just for photos. Photographers are also welcome to visit the flower farm to shoot professionally. Just let them know you’d like to purchase a photography day pass at the gate. They also ask that you don’t fly a drone without advance permission.

Etiquette for Capturing Those Amazing Oklahoma Tulips Photos

Whether you are an amateur or a professional, have some decorum. Don’t climb on things, don’t trample the flowers, don’t monopolize a certain space, or otherwise block others from being able to enjoy their day. Just be respectful of where you are and who is around you. Simple, right?

When Can You Pick Your Own Tulips at the Tulip Farm

In Oklahoma, tulip season typically begins in March and lasts through sometime in mid-April. Of course, everything depends on the weather so it’s important to follow Oklahoma Tulips on Facebook for updates. As Spring approaches and the flowers begin to grow, the owners will have a better idea of when they will be able to open the flower farm to visitors. Another reason to keep an eye on their Facebook page is that there may be days they need to close to give the field a rest.

How to Get to Oklahoma Tulips from Oklahoma City

Getting to the Oklahoma Tulips from Oklahoma City is relatively easy and only takes about 30 minutes by car. Depending on where you are coming from in the metro area, there are a few different routes. I will cover each of them here and you can pick the route that best suits your location.

Option 1: Follow I-40

Perhaps the most common route is to travel I-40 East. This is the most well-known interstate in Oklahoma and runs the entire length of the state from the Texas panhandle all the way to Arkansas. So, even if you are traveling from outside of the OKC metro, you will likely end up on I-40 for some duration of the trip. We’ll start these directions from the Oklahoma City segment.

Directions: Hop on I-40 and travel east towards Fort Smith. From Oklahoma City proper, you’ll drive approximately 20 miles until you reach exit 172 for Harrah. After exiting, you’ll turn north at the stop sign onto Harrah Road. Stay on this road for about four miles until you reach 29th Street. Turn left on 29th Street and Oklahoma Tulips will be on the left-hand side of the road across from Harps Food Store.

If you are traveling I-40 west toward Oklahoma City, the same directions apply. You’ll still take exit 172 toward Harrah and travel north until you reach 29th Street.

Travel Time: Approximately 30 minutes

Option 2: Follow 29th Street

This option is going to be better for visitors coming from the Midwest City area. It’s also a great alternative if, for whatever reason, traffic is delayed on I-40.

Directions: From Midwest City, travel east on 29th for about 9 miles. Most major intersections will cross 29th but the quickest option may be to take Reno to Choctaw Rd and connect from there. From the intersection of Reno and Choctaw, turn south. You will run into 29th after about 2 miles. Turn east and travel for just under 6 miles. Oklahoma Tulips will be on your right. If you pass Harps, you’ve gone too far.

Travel Time: Approximately 25 minutes

Option 3: Kilpatrick Turnpike

This option might appeal to visitors from the north side of Oklahoma City. Edmond, for example. It’s technically the fastest route from the Edmond area but it’s really only a few minutes difference to just take I-35 or I-235 to I-40 and just follow the above directions. There is no need to pay a toll over 5 minutes or so, in my opinion. However, if there is a wreck or traffic is backed up, it’s a good alternative. We will start directions at the I-35 interchange.

Directions: Enter Kilpatrick Turnpike South and travel for about 14 miles until you get to a town called Luther. Here, you will need to keep left and enter Kickapoo Turnpike. Travel down Kickapoo Turnpike until you reach exit 134 to SE 29th. It’s about 10 miles. Take exit 134 and continue driving east on SE 29th until you reach Oklahoma Tulips. The farm will be to right. If you pass Harps, you’ve gone too far.

Travel Time: Approximately 40 minutes
