I’m at Hamburger King, waiting on my burger, watching an older gentleman pick up the booth phone to order. It’s the only restaurant I know where that’s still how it works, and somehow, it’s better for it. Like me, he’s probably been coming here for decades, except more, and it’s not unlikely that’s the same booth he sits in every week. It’s a familiar scene when you head downtown for lunch in Shawnee – well-worn tables, kitchen clatter, and the shuffle of familiar faces settling into their favorite spot.

I grew up here and still live here, so I’ve watched the downtown food scene shift over the years. Shawnee is about 40 minutes east of Oklahoma City and 90 minutes from Tulsa, right off I-40, which makes it an easy lunch stop if you’re road-tripping or just looking to get out of the city for a bit. The variety is what keeps things interesting—old-school burger joints next down the street from farm-to-table cafes, and vegetarian spots with enough variety that actually have options even us meat eaters love.

If word reaches you that there’s nowhere to eat in Shawnee, here are five places I (and many local friends) actually eat when we meet up for lunch in Shawnee, not just the ones that look good on Instagram. And these are just the ones downtown.

5 of the Best Restaurants for Lunch in Downtown Shawnee, Oklahoma

Hamburger King: Classic Burgers Since 1927

Hamburger King has been in the same spot since 1927, which you can tell from the vinyl booths and the fact that each table has its own phone for ordering. Yes, you pick up the phone and call the counter. It’s one of those quirks that makes this place what it is, but not what keeps people coming back.

The burger itself is somewhat of a local legend. The no-frills patty is cooked on a flat-top, with American cheese if you want it, served in a basket with potato wedges. They tried swapping out for different wedges once and it sent the town into an uproar, but that’s a story for a different day. The burger basket isn’t going to change your life, but it’s a consistently good meal that tastes the same as it did when your parents were eating here. Maybe your grandparents too.

Save room for homemade pie. It isn’t the only restaurant in town with pie, but it is only one of two where you can order homemade pie by the slice. They usually have several flavors available, but popular ones are the chocolate cream, coconut cream, and the monkey pie – a two-layer pie with banana and chocolate.

Van’s Pig Stand – Old-School Oklahoma BBQ Since 1930

Van’s Pig Stand sits on Highland Avenue, slightly north of Main Street. Order at the counter, grab a table, and wait. It’s been working that way since 1930—and it’s the oldest single-family-owned BBQ restaurant in the state. The Vandergrift family has been running it for three generations.

The barbecue pork is especially popular, making the Pig Sandwich a solid lunch move. Instead of being pulled apart, the slow-smoked meat is sliced and chopped. From the meat to the pies, pretty much everything here is homemade including the sauce, relish, and house-cut curly fries. Their signature side item is the Vanized Potato – a twice-baked potato invented by Grandma Van, loaded with bacon, onions, and garlic butter.

It’s a casual, quick, and dependable barbecue spot that locals grew up on.

The Owl Shoppe – Vegetarian & Healthy Options

If you’re vegetarian or just tired of heavy food, The Owl Shoppe is your best bet in Shawnee for lunch. Chef Amanda runs daily specials that don’t show up on the regular menu—turkey tacos one day, lobster grilled cheese the next, or massive salads packed with actual fruits and vegetables instead of just lettuce and sad tomatoes.

The “Beets All the Rest,” a salad I once had on special, was loaded with fresh toppings that included roasted beets, goat cheese, walnuts, and a balsamic vinaigrette. It was filling without feeling like I needed a nap after. I also like the Greek salad and the strawberry spinach salad that are on the standard menu. A lot of times, I will upgrade my side to one of these because I don’t want to choose between a salad and something else that sounds good.

The avocado toast is solid too, and there are often specials with a Cajun flair. It’s the kind of place where the menu feels like someone’s actually thinking about what tastes good together. It’s creative, doesn’t rely on typical lunch menu options, and sides and toppings are always changing based on what’s in season. You’ll need to check Facebook for the daily special posted each morning.

Location: 6 E Main St, Shawnee, OK 74801
Hours: Tue-Sat 11 am-2:30 pm, Sometimes dinner on Friday (check Facebook)
Price Range: Typically, $11-16 per person
What to Order: Whatever the daily special is, wellness bowls, avocado toast
Parking: Street parking on Main Street or along the side of Broadway
Good for: Vegetarians, health-conscious diners, solo lunch
Accessibility: Ground-level entrance
Dietary: Best vegetarian options in Shawnee, vegan-friendly items available, plenty of protein too

The Lunch Box – Soups, Sandwiches, and Comfort Food

The Lunch Box is where I go when I want something simple but filling. “Not Deli. Just Delicious.” That’s their motto. Their soups rotate, the sandwiches are fresh, and meat is cooked in-house. They have a meatloaf sandwich on the menu every day—the only place in Shawnee where that’s true.

My usual order is the Pot Roast Spud, especially if I’m in the mood for comfort food. It’s a baked potato loaded with pot roast, onions, carrots, and gravy—warm and heavy in the best way. For a lighter meal, I like the Southwest Turkey Club. And, I always get a no-bake cookie. Every single time.

Location: 217 E Main St, Shawnee, OK 74801
Hours: Mon-Fri 10:30 am-2 pm
Price Range: Typically, $8-13 per person
What to Order: Pot Roast Spud, meatloaf sandwich, daily soup
Parking: Street parking on Main Street
Good for: Quick lunch and solo diners
Accessibility: Ground-level entrance

Theopolis Social Club – An Upscale Lunch Option (or brunch)

The dining room at Theopolis feels a little fancy for Shawnee’s Main Street—exposed brick, craft cocktails, moody decor. The menu is largely a mix of light to heavy meals that are elevated versions of comfort food. For example, the mac and cheese with hatch chile queso and burnt ends is so good. The Shawnee Cheesesteak is what I order almost every time for lunch. shaved ribeye with onions and melted mozzarella on a baguette served with truffle fries.

Main Street Brussels is good if you’re sharing, and so is the Spinach and Artichoke Dip. They use local ingredients when they can and make everything from scratch. It’s the kind of place where you can bring someone who doesn’t think small-town Oklahoma has good food and prove them wrong.

Location: 419 E Main St, Shawnee, OK 74801
Hours: Verify
Price Range: $15-$25 per person (lunch)
What to Order: Shawnee Cheesesteak, Spinach Artichoke Dip, Main Street Brussels

Things to Do in Shawnee After Lunch in Shawnee, OK

If you’re driving from OKC or Tulsa specifically for lunch in Shawnee, Oklahoma, you might as well make it a half-day trip. Downtown Shawnee has enough to keep you busy for a couple of hours after eating.

Pottawatomie County Museum & Santa Fe Depot (Main Street)

Small local history museum behind the Santa Fe Depot with rotating exhibits about Shawnee and Pottawatomie County. The Santa Fe Depot is not open right now as it is undergoing a restoration process, but you can still admire it from the outside, see the Beard Cabin, and take pictures there and by the railcar.

Downtown Shawnee Shopping

Main Street has a few antique and novelty shops worth browsing. Nothing major, but good for killing an hour or two after lunch. Treasures N Junk Vintiques and The Arts at 317 are a couple of my favorites, but there are also several other interesting shops, depending on your interests.

1895 Homemade Ice Cream (Main Street)

If you haven’t had dessert (or even if you have), walk to 1895 on the corner of Main and Bell. This is a seasonal shop, but if you are in town during the spring or summer, it’s a great place to grab a scoop of ice cream in flavors you’re not likely to find elsewhere.

Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art (10 minutes from downtown)

The museum is small but houses a solid art collection curated by its namesake Fr. Gerrer, a Benedictine monk. The museum is one of the oldest in the state and home to the only Egyptian mummies in Oklahoma.
